When is the Labour Shortage?

Hello, it’s me, Mr. Candidate.

Just the other day I realized that the first group of Baby Boomers are one year away from retirement. One of the hottest topics over the last 5 years has been around how to managing the impending talent shortage that starts in 2007. What to do, what to do,…hmmmmm?

One Thought - I’m curious to learn more about recruiting strategies as we head into the “talent shortage”, predicted to hit the Canadian market next year.

I’ve read the same information as you, seen the same demographic tables and heard the same people tell us “that the sky is falling” in corporate Canada. As an (almost) 40 year old, I feel 2 pressures,… filling in for those people who are soon to exit, and lead those that are soon to enter the working landscape.

Another Thought - I’m equally curious to understand the severity that organizations are putting on this labor shortage.

Today, unlike yesterday, people are not “old” at 65. The importance that today’s Baby Boomers put toward healthy eating, physical fitness, vitamins and the power of staying young, what was old yesterday is “Middle aged” today.

I have parents, aunts, uncles and family friends that are not looking to retire at 65,… “what would I do with retirement”? Their fear of what to do may give you a few more years to delivery your strategy. Has anyone every thought of a new job creation at 65 called “Mentor”. Place a high potential employee with an experienced employee to job shadow and knowledge share so that your organization is ready for the transition, whenever that comes?

Just wondering what my employment future may look like,…….
